Melora Hardin has had an incredible career and has landed roles in some of the biggest television shows and movies in history. However, she was almost in one of the most iconic movies of all time…Back to the Future.
I don’t know how I didn’t know this before. Maybe I did and I just didn’t put two and two together, but you were originally cast as Jennifer Parker, correct?
Yes, that’s right.
But you were too tall for Michael J. Fox so they had to replace you?
That’s what I read. That’s incredible. I don’t know why I didn’t know that.
Someone’s writing a book about Back to the Future and sort of the history of it. And I had an interview with him last year sometime. He was the one that told me that it was the female executives that thought that it was in emasculating to have the star of the movie, have a girlfriend that was taller than he was.
And I thought, for as far as we still have to go and for as much as we need to change — we need to get equality for women, black people, trans people, you know, there’s so much still that we need to work on in our culture and in our society — But I have to say, I think that is not something you would hear in 2020. I do not think you would have female executives say that they felt it was emasculating to have a woman taller than the male star of their movie. I just don’t think you would hear that. So I think that we’ve made a little bit of progress.
Melora Hardin can currently be seen on The Bold Type on Freeform and Hulu.
